Roger Rizk presents this week's Sunday School lesson titled, "Celebrate Passover Liberation." Roger explains that throughout our lives, there are many things that can bring us joy. Serving a Just God - 02/27/22
During this week's Sunday School lesson, Pat Glenn continues our discussion on Job, concluding his story by looking at his final encounter with God. Pat explains that Job demonstrates how we should serve God for God's own sake, not because we expect some reward in return for our piety. It also shows us that the suffering of man is not necessarily a result of our sin, but that the equities of life will be addressed according to God's plan. |
|
Justice and Job - 02/20/22
This week Sylvia Seawell presents our Sunday School lesson titled, "Justice and Job." While many of us are familiar with Job's story, Sylvia points out some of the less obvious takeaways when it comes to Job's friends. During the middle part of the story, we see Job's friend attempt to comfort him, but yet miss the point altogether. Sylvia then discusses how we can learn from these mistakes when it comes to comforting our own friends. |
|
Justice and the Marginalized - 01/30/22
This week Roger Rizk presents our online Sunday School lesson titled, "Justice and the Marginalized", which focuses on Deuteronomy 16, 17, and 19. Roger points out that during the pandemic, those on the periphery have become even more marginalized, with fewer opportunities and access to basic needs. |
The Laws of Justice and Mercy - 01/16/22
This week Ellen Cinq-Mars presents our online Sunday School lesson entitled, "The Laws of Justice and Mercy," which studies Exodus 23. This piece of scripture works to answer the question "who is my neighbor?" by describing the ways justice should be shown to everyone impartially. Ellen explains that this impartiality is exactly the kind of love that God shows us. God does not have favorites. Instead, we are shown mercy time and time again. And that mercy goes hand in hand with God's justice. |

|
Justice for God's Beloved People - 12/26/21
This week Craig Whitley presents our Sunday School lesson titled, "Justice for God's Beloved People," which studies Nahum 1. In this passage, we see Nahum prophesy that God will destroy Ninevah as punishment for their sinfulness. Craig admits that this lesson may seem out of place as we have just finished celebrating Christ's birth. However, Craig points out that God's justice is like a two-sided coin. On one side, God has great love and mercy for us, but on the other side, we see that as much as God loves us, God hates sin and that judgment can come when we choose to dwell in sin. |
|
Justice and Righteousness Reign - 12/19/21
In this week's Sunday School Lesson, we hear from Russell Harris as he presents, "Justice and Righteousness Reign," which focuses on Isaiah 9:1-7. |
Justice and Obedience to the Law - 12/05/21
In this week's Sunday School Lesson, we hear from Claude Hathcock as he presents, "Justice and Obedience to the Law," which focuses on Deuteronomy 5, 10, 27, and 28. While it may seem odd to focus on justice as we approach the Christmas season, today's lesson reminds us that God's justice always stems from love and compassion. Claude illustrates how a covenant relationship with God, as outlined throughout the Old Testament, is the only way that we will find true well-being and peace as individuals and a community. God desires to be close to us, and the covenant served as a formal agreement of how the Israelites were to live and how God, in return, would make them his people. |
|
Good News for All - 11/28/21
Beth Silvers presents today's Sunday School lesson titled, "Good News for All," which studies Acts 10:34-47. Beth tells us how, in today's passage, we see Peter become aware of the openness of Christ and how everyone, not just the Jewish people, is called to repent and believe the Gospel. Beth also explains how this passage parallels Pentecost, but instead of focusing on the Apostles, shows that any person - regardless of race or nationality - can be filled with the Holy Spirit. God shows no partiality! Hence, we are all called to share the Good News with all we encounter. |
|

Greg Sellers presents today's Sunday School lesson titled, "Praise for God's Eternal Reign," which continues our study of Revelation. |
All People Praise God - 11/07/21
Claude Hathcock presents today's Sunday School lesson titled, "All People Praise God," which begins our focus on the book of Revelation, focusing today on Revelation 7. Claude explains that studying Revelation takes a bit more preparation than other books of the Bible, as no other book has shown up in popular culture so much. The imagery is vivid and shocking, but Claude tells us that Revelation 7 is a high point in the Bible regarding worship and praise as people of all languages and backgrounds are depicted praising the Lord together. It acknowledges that suffering occurs, but provides hope that salvation is brought through Jesus Christ. |
|

Ellen Cinq-Mars presents today's Sunday School lesson titled, "The Joy of Worship," which studies Psalm 84. We long for a home with God, and thusly God will give us strength for the journey to return home. |

Lenise Melton presents today's Sunday School lesson titled, "David Dances Before the Ark", which studies 2 Samuel 6. In this lesson, Lenise discusses how David's raw expression of joy while praising God has a way of making most Presbyterians uncomfortable. Yet, we read that David's worship of God in front of the Ark pleased God. Contrary to how we might feel! Perhaps, Lenise suggests, we should consider the importance of praising and worshiping God with our whole being - whatever form that takes. |

|

The Gospel, Cookie explains, is a dynamic, ever-morphing, yet stabile phenomenon that lived in the hearts of disciples and followers in Jesus' time, but also resides in us today. The Gospel is about Jesus, and of Jesus, and is Jesus, Cookie says. But even more, the Gospel is the power of God for salvation. |

Ellen Cinq-Mars presents today's Sunday School lesson titled, "An Attitude of Gratitude", which studies Leviticus 13-14, Luke 5:12-16, and Luke 17:11-19. In this lesson, Ellen dissects the story of the healing of the ten lepers looking at its connection to gratitude. As Christians, we see gratitude as a direct result of God's grace. The same grace that Jesus showed the ten lepers when he cleansed them of their disease. He saw the lepers, whom others chose not to see, and the Samaritan saw what the other lepers failed to see. Ultimately, Ellen points out, ten men were cleansed, but only one was healed and made whole. |

Rescued from Doubt - 06/27/21
Bob Blake presents today's Sunday School lesson titled, "Rescued from Doubt", which studies Matthew 14:22-33. In this lesson, Bob paints a picture of the disciples caught out on the Sea of Galilee in the midst of a storm and Jesus making his way out to them walking on the water. The story reaches its climax as Peter walks out to join Jesus on the water, only to flounder as his fear overtakes him. Bob explains that to express fear or doubt is not to have lost faith. Rather, we confess our human weakness and recognize that we must rely on God's strength. Bob explains that "despite Peter’s role with the disciples and his closeness to Jesus, Peter had not yet conquered his fear and doubt. Jesus saved Peter in the midst of the storm – not after he calmed the sea." In the same way, we are reminded that Jesus is never far from us in the midst of our own storms. |

However, today Cookie focuses on a passage that does not call for condemnation, but instead for hope. |

She tells us that, often, the prophets found themselves in just such a situation. Through his prayers, he intercedes for others, those whom he is close to, and those still to come. When we share in private prayer with God, we pour out our very souls in much of the same way.
